Bag of Rice Project #92 – A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Bassey family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Green, Martin, and Reeck families this is the 92nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family on the recommendation of a friend. This family lives in Uyo, Nigeria and they live in a an uncompleted building where Mr Bassey works as a handyman for a compound of buildings. He is living there for as long as he does his handyman job for the compound and if he loses his job, he does not have any place to stay. The Basseys have 3 kids and Mr Bassey has to do a lot to help his family survive.

The Basseys cook their meal in a corner of their house with just a piece of zinc to protect the food from rain and they use firewood to cook. Mr Bassey is skilled in carpentry and roofing of houses. He works to maintain the houses from any damage and they in turn allow him to stay in the house and pay him just a little money since he is not paying rent. His wife Mrs rosemary is a housewife and takes care of their 3 young kids.

Their kitchen

This family have really passed through a lot, before Mr Bassey got this job. They were homeless and were living on the streets. They were really happy when they saw what we brought for them. They were so grateful for the bag of Rice and were genuinely surprised and happy that we came to them. I loved this family and their and their spirit and happiness affected us. We left this family knowing that we left them better than we met them.
