DIY hairbows that are easy to make

My daughter is a little old for cute little hair clips. So I was a little surprised when she asked me to make her some. I was glad to get the chance, because it has been a long time since she wore them! She plays volleyball for her middle school and she wanted them for her games. Since I had to buy ribbon for them anyway, I got enough to do them for the rest of the girls too so they could all match. These are perfect for putting on a pony tail or braid and work for little girls or big girls.

You will need:

Ribbon (I used 2 different colors for the team colors) grosgrain is best

sewing scissors

thread and needle

coordinating hair elastic bands

small candle

Begin by cutting your ribbon in the desired size. I used about 18 inches for each bow.

Once your ribbon is cut, lay it down so it looks similar to an awareness ribbon (think breast cancer or similar)

Once you have your ribbon with the tails the length you want them to hang, fold the top of the curve down so it rests underneath the sides like so. Once you are there you will want to adjust them so they are even and look nice.

Once they are the way you want them, grab your thread and scissors and tie a knot in the end. Grab a fairly long piece because you will be wrapping around several times.

You will also grab your ponytail holder and hold it against the back.

Push your needle and thread through, starting from the back so the knot doesn’t show. Wrap around the bow and through the middle of the ponytail holder several times. Be sure to hold tight so it isn’t loose. You want a good tight grip.

Once you have gone around several times, secure your thread by passing the needle through under the loops a few times.  Trim off your edges.

Now it is time to make sure they don’t fray. I am sure you had some fraying as you made your ribbon. Light a small candle and hold the ribbon near, but far enough that it will not actually catch the ribbon on fire. You just want it to singe and melt the very edge so that there will be no additional fraying.

I normally wouldn’t pick gold and brown if I was just randomly picking, but that is our lovely school colors so that is what I made.
