How to tell a Male Bell Pepper from a Female Bell Pepper ~ Garden Tips

How to tell a Male Bell Pepper from a Female Bell Pepper

How to tell a female or Male bell pepper

Learned something new today from my neighbor while working in our garden.  Leaning over our fence he asked “How do you tell a male bell pepper from a female bell pepper?” He told me that there are both male bell peppers and female bell peppers (I looked it up on the internet to confirm it was true and if you find it on the internet it must be true LOL).  My neighbor went on tell me that there is a difference in how they look and what they are better used for. And said “Now you know how to tell a male bell pepper from a female bell pepper!” Did you know that there are two kinds of bell peppers?

So How Do You Tell A Male Bell Pepper From A Female Bell Pepper ?

The Female Bell Peppers  and more round, they have 4 bumps on the bottom. They have more seeds on the inside and when eaten raw the female bell peppers are sweeter than the male bell peppers.  So these are better for salads, veggie trays and sandwiches.

The Male Bell  Peppers  are taller and thin, they only have 3 bumps.  They are not as sweet but hold up better in heat  and are better for cooking. These are perfect for stews, dips, and cooking.

So next time you are in your garden or in the grocery store, flip over the peppers and  see if your buying “boys or girls” 🙂

  1. angelasettle81 Snopes is quite a credible site. Unlike most people (given your comment, I should probably include you), they actually do extensive research to find out the truth.

  2. Lmao. False. They don’t have genders. The main plants do. Herp derp.
Bell pepper plants are protogynous. They self-pollinate. Maybe you should actually learn a bit about plants before you decide to post something so stupid, hm?

  3. Soooo..I have two “bumps” and I am better AT cooking than most females.However..my lady having 4 ” bumps/lumps” is most definablly sweeter and rounder in all the right areas..
I’d like to point out that where there are male and female plants the fruit they bear cannot be gendered..How do you explain them all having seeds?? Huh?? Are there male n female tomatoes, grapes, oranges, apples?? Fook no! Believe some of what you see ..some of what you hear..but for the love of god..use the common sense your given (unless you were denied completely) and stop spreading your poorly educated bullticky for others to be infected by it. Take time to enjoy a male banana and ponder your stupidity..

  4. Wowsers…this information is totally incorrect. Not everything you read on the internet is ‘fact’. My mum touted this male/female capsicum thing today and I laughed…I’m a university qualified biologist and capsicums aren’t male and female. That is ridiculous. The reproductive parts of a capsicum plant’s flowers are male (anthers) and female (stigma)…and the result of pollination is the fruit (the capsicum) which is neither male or female. It’s a fruit with seeds!!! The bumps on the end are just the ends of each ‘locule’ or cell of the fruit, which can be numbered 3 or 4, depending on what happened during pollination…and is NOT a sign of gender.

  5. mcmoses  I have done the same thing and BOY was it a big difference to me.

  6. My husband and I read about the difference in peppers about a year ago. So we bought one of each (a boy and girl Green Bell Pepper) and done a taste test in our house (with 4 people at different times). There is a noticeable difference in the taste. The four bump (girl) was sweeter and not as firm as the three bump (boy) Pepper. My family likes the girl peppers better. LOL

This makes me laugh… thanks. Pinned this so I can refer back to it.
