About Us

I am a stay at home mom with four wonderful kids. I have been married for over 10 years to my best friend. I am head over heels in love with him. He always supports my crazy "thrifty adventures". We have a lot of fun together.

I was raised on a small dairy farm. Where I learned very young, the value of hard work and how to be thrifty in all areas of life. Growing up our meals were made from scratch. Only on special occasion would we get name brand cereal, chips, or any other fancy treats. Now that I am a Mom with my own budget, the basic foods always comes first. I too make most of our meals from scratch and take pride in feeding my family a well balanced healthy diet.

I enjoy seeing how far I can make our budget stretch, and when I take the time to match sales with coupons I am able to get all those "fun & fancy" items that would other wise be out of my budget. Being thrifty has always been a way of life for me, but it has also become a real joy.

Magic Recipe to get Crayons out of clothing

load of clothes

Have any of you  washed a crayon with your clothes, and ruined a whole load of clothes?  My friend Mellisa did this the other day (with her kids brand new summer clothes) she was so excited when she was able to get it all out with a “magic recipe” that she was willing to share it with all of you…

Here is the magic recipe:
1 c. Clorox 2
1 c. Borax
1 c. white vinegar
1 c. hydrogen peroxide
1 c. Triple Action Shout
3/4 c. Oxy Magic

It’ll cost you about $30 to get it all but that is better than having to replace your clothes (which I’m sure would cost hundreds). Put your “ruined” clothes in the washer and put all of these ingredients on top of them. Set your washer to hot water and to a heavily soiled setting. The clothes need to soak for at least 30 minutes (so depending on what kind of washer you have- either use soak option on washer or fill your tub with enough hot water to soak the clothes). Then wash normally with your regular detergent.

I seriously do not have a single sign of red or pink in my clothes. I am thrilled with the results. Think of me when/if you have to use this and let me know how it worked for you.

When this happened to me I called 1-800-CRAYOLA. They told me to spray WD-40 on the marks, rub it in well, and wash. It worked great. I have used this more times than I care to think of over the years. It seems each of my boys has to leave a crayon in his pocket at least once. WD-40 is a must have item in my house.

Happened to me with a bunch of hubby’s work clothes because son put a brown crayon from school in a lower cargo pant pocket that I did not check. I really did think for a second that the dryer had pooped on the clothes. Needless to say, I am now training my boys to check all their pockets themselves before putting them in the hamper. So far so good…and their future wives will love me for it too!

i just had the crayon nightmare happen too! didn’t notice anything after washing, but sure did after the dryer got done with the full load. i wasn’t up for using a ton of products (especially with bleach because i seem to have bad luck with it) so i sent my husband out to buy Carbona Stain Devils made for ink and crayon (very small yellow bottle in the detergent/strain remover section of the grocery store). with alot of patience i dabbed it on each area of ink on the clothing i really wanted to save and washed again- came out perfect. i also happened to have a full big bottle of Carbona Stain Wizard (bought at Joann’s Fabrics in the sewing section). it was not formulated for anything specific but i tried it on the remaining clothes and it worked too! you’d never know what a mess they had been. my mom has been using Carbona since I was a kid (i’m now 37) and it hasn’t failed either of us yet!

I had this problem as well and asked Martha Stewart how to solve it. I even got to be on her show when they talked about it! They used something called mineral spirits that you get at an art supply store. It works great.
