Thrifty Mom’s famous Sweet Shredded Pork Tacos

So one of our most requested recipes is our Sweet Shredded Pork Tacos.  This is a copy cat recipe of the shredded pork that is served at Cafe Rio.  Thanks to my Friend Ann for sharing it with me!

Don’t forget to make the YUMMY cilantro ranch dressing here

You will need:

  • 1-10 lbs Pork tenderloin roast ( any pork roast will work)
  • 2 cans of Tomato sauce 15 oz
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 can of Dr Pepper
  • 1 clove garlic diced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro minced

Add your meat to the Crock pot, it will taste best if you use about 5 lbs….I did it with 8 lbs and the flavors were not as bold as I would have liked them.  But the Recipe says you can use up to 10lbs so it is all a matter of taste.

Add your Tomato sauce, brown sugar, and garlic.

Add  can of soda, and cilantro.   ( If you do not want to cook with soda I guess you could use broth instead, but the Dr Pepper makes it super sweet and helps tenderize the meat)

Put the lid on your crock pot, cook over Medium Heat at Least 4-6 hours.  (keep checking and the longer you cook it the more it falls apart, so the longer the better)

Once tender and pulls off easily with a fork, take out of the liquid and shred with a fork.

Once Pork is shredded, put all the meat back in to the liquid.

Eat on tortilla, with rice, black beans, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and Cilantro Ranch dressing.

I have the same question as Tara AND my crockpot does not have a medium heat, just low or high. Which one should I do and for how long?

We're having this for dinner tonight, just stopped by to print off the ranch recipe. Don't let me down Thrifty Mom!!! ;)


I have a new and easy one too. Same kind of roast but I add a large can or green enchillada sauce and slow cook all day for chili verde. the family loves it.


I make something very similar and very easy. Winco is where I shop for the meat and salsa so not sure if every store carries it. Pork Carnitas (how ever many pounds you think your family will eat) 1 jar arriba roasted green pepper salsa (found by the refried beans, others salsas ect..) Place meat in the crockpot around and pour salsa over it. when the meat is tender enough like you do shred it and place back in crock pot. Let cook on low for an hour more. It will suck up all the juice so dont worry you will have soggy tacos :). I put it in around 12 and its done by 5/6pm dinner.


If only I had any of the ingredients in my pantry right now. I would be one happy pregnant lady. It looks so good.


I LOVE this recipe! I've only made it once so far, but it's now going to be a regular item. I have one question though... for the tomato sauce, is that 2-15oz cans or a total of 15oz? I read it as 2-15oz cans so I used a 29oz can instead. That and the can of soda seemed like alot! It turned out great, just a lot of extra liquid. Just wanted to be sure I was doing it correctly. Thanks for sharing! The sauce is excellent too!
