Bag of Rice Project #348 -A visit to the Sunday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign
. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Sunday family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Barbara McKnight this is the 348th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Sunday family in Ibesikpo village just outisde Uyo, Nigeria.  They live in a very small zinc roof uncompleted building surrounded with beautiful plants. We met the full house. Mr Sunday Bassey and Mrs. Mfon Sunday, their three handsome boys. They live in the same uncompleted building as the Okon and Utong families.

Mrs. Mfon is a trader. We were happy to come see her selling her sweet cassavas from her house, which she harvested and her fresh dried garri. This is their lovely kitchen where she prepares meals and also fries her garri and packages it for sale. Mr Sunday works in the market as a rice carrier, he either carries on his head or with the help of a wheelbarrow. I recognized him and made him to take me to his house and introduce me to his family. Being a carrier is very hard work with little pay, but in our current situation you take any job even if the pay is minimal.

The irony in this situation is both the parents jobs have them selling or loading food all day, however the promise of a daily meal for them is often a struggle. Hunger is a common visiter to this family and most in their village. This bag of rice will ease that burden for a few months.

I know Mr Sunday from the market and I was so happy to meet him and insisted that he takes me to his family. Mr Sunday is an honest man and I explained to him that today he has received one of those bags of Rice that he has helped me carry so many times in the past. He introduced me to his whole family and they were happy and thanked us for the donation and I hope it would go a long way in helping to take care of their kids as well.
