Bag of Rice Project #605 -A visit to the Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Akpan family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Fabiana Huffaker , and this is the 605th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Akpan family in Mbiaso village. When we got to the compound we saw the children playing outside and when they saw us they greeted us and we told them to get us their father and mother. The children went in and the father came out, he greeted us and asked us what brought us to his compound, because he had not seen this face before in the community. We told him we do not stay in the community that we came to give his family a a bag of rice, he shouted “ABASI NMI” Meaning my God, he did not believe his eyes because it was so strange and he do not expect someone to give him a bag of rice without giving something back in return. We told him someone donated the bag of rice to the family, after asking us which political party sent us to give him a bag of rice. He was surprised someone he did not know would just donate a bag of rice to his family without him giving something back, he started praying in their local dialect and saying God would bless the donor. The Akpan family stays in a one room apartment, the house is built with blocks and does not have the basic amenities. They do not have electricity and access to good water, they depend on the water from the stream which is not healthy. The family is blessed with 6 children and at the moment only two of the kids are in school, they are unable to train all of them in school because they lack money.

The Akpan family do not have a proper cooking gas, they are left with no option than to use firewood to cook, which is harmful to the health and can cause damage to the important organs in the body. They are unable to afford a cooking gas because of how expensive it is, they are unable to feed well and according to them it won’t make economic sense if they get a cooking gas when firewood is free, they go to the forest to fetch firewood and this is what they are able to afford. Mr. Akpan and his wife are farmers and they use this to fend for the family.

Mr. Akpan was praying for the donor as we were leaving, and he was ecstatic because he hadn’t eaten rice in a long time due to its high cost. He prayed that God would bless the donor and provide for them when they needed it, opening all doors for them. As we departed, he continued to pray and told us to thank the donor. As we departed, the family was in a joyful mood.
