Bag of Rice Campaign #2 – A visit to Ugo Otu Mbe

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive.

THANK YOU to Courtney Weber for purchasing this bag of rice, she purchased it in honor of her mother Sally Jackson. This is the 2nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations!

We delivered a Bag of Rice to a village in Afikpo, Ebonyi state, Nigeria. Mrs Ugo Otu Mbe is a blind 79 year old woman, who lives alone. She lives in an old house that is located in a hilly area. Her blindness makes it so difficult for her to move around as all she has to help her get around is her walking stick.

She has 5 kids but for some reason has been abandoned by all of them. She relies on strangers and neighbors to get her water and food for her to survive. She has been widowed for more than 30 years and people around her have been of great help to her. Families usually contribute in helping her out and fixing things for her. Her living conditions were sparse and bare as she does not have much to get by.

When we told her the reason for our visit, she was emotional and thanked us for very long time and prayed for us. She even used a rarely seen traditional means of blessing where an aged person spits on your hand and holds it in hers while she blesses you. We felt very special as these method is usually being used when the occasion is special. We could see that she was more than overjoyed at our visit and it meant a lot to her that we cared about her that much to visit her. I felt so blessed about this experience that in her state, a little act of kindness can go a long way in lifting up their spirits.
