Bag of Rice Project #102 -A visit to the Umoh Family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Umoh family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Shelly Crabtree and Shelly Sellers this is the 102nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by the local chief in the village we went visited. We met this family in a small village outside Uyo, Nigeria. We only met Mr Umoh at home because all his family went to the farm. Mr Umoh has 3 children and lives in an uncompleted one room apartment and shares the utilities with his other neighbors. This family was interesting for us to meet and we will go back to this little village if we can to visit more needy people in the area.

Front view of their home

The Umohs cook in a small corner in front of their home as they do not have an extra room to use as a kitchen. They use firewood to cook which is the cheapest mode of cooking in Nigeria. Mr Umoh is currently unemployed but he has skills as he was a tailor but lost his shop when he could not pay his rent. Now the entire family depends on the small farm they own and tend to everyday so that they can sell and eat what they grow.

Their kitchen

We felt for this family after we saw their living conditions and spoke to Mr Umoh. He was very welcoming and did not expect anything from us and when we told him what we brought for them he was overwhelmed by happiness. He kept thanking us and saying how grateful he was. I know how much this must have meant for them and how much it will help them get through this hard times ahead. I’d like to thank the donors as this special family appreciates this gift and totally deserves this. We were glad seeing smiles on their faces and we were glad we left them better than we met them.
