Bag of Rice Project #107 -A visit to the Ruben family #bagofriceproject

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Ruben family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Sandi Obanion this is the 107th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met thei wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. The Ruben family was a delight for us to meet and talk to. We met them after being introduced to them by their village leader. The Rubens live in a two bedroom mud house. They have seperate structures for their bathroom and kitchen. The Rubens have 4 kids. It has not been easy for them as Mr Ruben lost his job working in a nearby factory and and his current job is not enough for their famly.

The Ruben family cook in the open using an iron construct which carries the pot and firewood placed under it. This is the cheapest method of cooking in Nigeria as it involves only easily gotten wood and a spark. After losing his job at a local factory, Mr Amos rides a bike like the one seen above and uses it for commercial purposes. Its not really lucrative as the bike is old and needs repairs most of the time. Mrs Ruben fries Garri and sells it. Garri is gotten from cassava and it is one of the main foods here.

This family was a wonderful family for us to meet and talk to. They welcomed us and answered all the questions I had about them. When we told them about why we came and what we brought for them, they were happy thanked those who doanted for them to receive this bag pf Rice. The appreciated the gift and for this family this food will go a long way in helping them take care of themselves. We left this family knowing that they were happy with what we brought for them and will benefit a lot from it.
