Bag of Rice Project #111 -A visit to the Augustine family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Augustine family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Julie Bryson this is the 111th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who also acted as our translator. They live in a one room mud hut with zinc roof. Mrs Edim Augustine is a widow, whose husband died last year. She has two kids and was very welcoming to us when we visited her.

Mrs Edim does not have a kitchen, she cooks inside the room where her and her kids stay in. On sunny days she sets up firewood outside the house but she does not have a constructed kitchen like others do. She is a farmer for hire and tills other peoples farms for a fixed fee. She told me that such jobs don’t come easily and she only gets opportunities when people are too sick to farm for themselves. Mr Edim is a strong woman and the more I spoke to her the more I saw and admired her courage.

I did not have much of a problem communicating with Mrs Edim as she could understand a little English. When I told her why we came and what we brought for her she was very happy and grateful for the bag of Rice and those who donated it. This family has suffered many challenges and seeing the joy on their face because of a bag of Rice was humbling to witness. I was happy that we were able to give this family this food and I know that it will benefit them and help them face and overcome their challenges.
