Bag of Rice Project #112 -A visit to the Jonah family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Jonah family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Montay Dixon this is the 112th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village leader. The Jonah family lives in a zinc constructed house with all its other utilities outside. Mrs Affiong is a widow and she lost her husband many years ago. She has 3 children but we did not meet any at home and we only met her nephew who also stays with her. Mrs Jonah was delightful to meet, she had a warm hug for everyone she saw and asked us if we had eaten.

Front view of their house

Mrs Jonah cooks with a small kerosene stored inside her house and she does not have a separate place for kitchen so she cooks inside her house. Mrs Jonah is a farmer and she was at her farm when we came and had to run back to the house to see us. She does not have money to hire people to help her so her and her children have to work on the farm and they survive off of what they plant and harvest.

The inside of their house

Mrs Jonah could not speak English but when my words were translated I could see her smile and happiness. Even when she asked us if the whole bag of Rice was for her. I was touched by her humility and strength. She was grateful for those who donated and made it possible for her to have this bag of Rice. She did not have much and this bag of Rice will make a huge difference in her life and help her and her family to survive this pandemic. I was happy to leave this family knowing that we left them happier than we met them.
