Bag of Rice Project #114 -A visit to the Dickson family #bagofriceproject

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Dickson family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Susan Jackson this is the 114th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were recommended to us by their local leader. The Dickson family live in a rented one bedroom apartment with the utilities like bathroom and toilet outside of the main house. It took us a long drive to get to where the Dicksons were staying but the journey was worth it after we met this wonderful family.

Because of the time we arrived at the Dicksons house we did not meet Mrs Dickson in the house. She is learneing how to be a hairdresser and was off to her workplace and could not make it to see us. Mr Dickson is a tailor and since they do not afford to rent a shop, he works from home and his customers have to come to his house to get measured or get their clothes. We also met their son Destiny who was a delight to meet, even with an injury on his jaw which he got from running around, he did not stop him from playing and talking to us.

This family was special to us. We specifically traveled a long way to see them as their village head told me that they were having trouble feeding and were in dire need. When we met them, they were happy to see the bag of Rice that we brought for them. They also prayed for and thanked those who donated the bag of Rice for them. I know that this family are happier and would not have to worry too much as they now have food that will last them for a while.
