Bag of Rice Project #115 -A visit to the Obong family #bagofriceproject

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Obong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Catherine Smith and Sandy Bodin this is the 115th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in Uyo, Nigeria. We met the Obong family through their local community leader. The Obong family live in a rented one bedroom apartment and share utilities with their other neighbors in the same compound. Mrs Obong is a widow and 4 kids that she is trying hard to raise.

Mrs Obong cooks in a semi open kitchen with a roof to keep out the rain. She uses firewood as fuel as that is the cheapest fuel she can cook with. Mrs Obong does not have a farm like most people in this village do, instead she works on other peoples farms for a fee and that is the only work she feeds her children with. Sometimes if the farm is too large then her children has to help her out. She was actually working when we came and one of her kids ran to fetch her. She was very happy to see us.

Mrs Obong has been working very hard for her young family and doing a lot of work to take care of them. So meeting her and talking to her was a delight for us. When we spoke to her and told her what we brought for her she was very happy and I’m sure relieved. This is another example of a strong mother doing all she can to help out her family and I’m happy that we were led to help out this wonderful family.
