Bag of Rice Project #116 -A visit to the Abara family #bagofriceproject

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Abara family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Kerri Lindstrom this is the 116th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was referred to us by their village chief. We met this family in a village in the outskirts of Uyo, Nigeria. The Abara family live in a mud house which is normal for people in this village. We met Mr Abara, a widower who has 2 children. He also lives with and takes care of his grandmother.

Mr Abara was working on their kitchen as at the time we came. The kitchen is made maily of bamboo sticks and will have a zinc or thatch roof. The Abaras cook with firewood as that is the cheapest form of fuel they can find. People who live in this village are mainly farmers and Mr Abara is a farmer as well. He struggles to take care of his children and his mother but so far they have been surviving.

Meeting this special family was a privilege for us, we loved the time we spent in this village and the people we met and this family was special to us. When we met Mr Abara and told him why we came, he was very happy and expressed his thanks to the donors who helped his family out. Their house is about to fall down and he says the harvests has not really been fruitful and this bag of Rice is a blessing to their family. I was happy to talk with this family and we were happy we left them better than we met them.
