Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ediong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Carrie Peters this is the 119th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met this wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. The Ediong family live in an uncompleted building that they managed to make livable. Mr Ediong is a widower and he has 4 kids but we only met 3 of his kids in the house. This family was a delight to meet and the youngest son just made all of us laugh with jokes.
The Ediongs cook in a makeshift kitchen made of sticks and a zinc roof. They used a tough material to cover the sides from rain and they use sticks they get from the bush as fuel to cook. Mr Ediong is the village mortician and I understandably did not ask for more details except that he complained of being unable to feed his family so I’m assuming that business is not going very well which means people in this village live very long and that is a good thing.

This family was extremely fun to meet and was the last family we delivered to that day and we had a warm conversation with the whole family. When we told Mr Ediong why we came and what we brought for the family, he was happy and grateful for those who donated to help his family to not starve. This family is a special family and we got the largest smiles we got that day from them and we could tell that they were genuinely happy that we came to see them.
