Bag of Rice Project #128 -A visit to the Oduehi family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Oduehi family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tanya Kaplan this is the 128th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside Aba, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their church leader. Mrs Oduehi is a widow and she has 2 kids. They live in a rented one bedroom apartment and share all other utilities with their neighbor next door. When we were going to this village my dad said he had been there before and that he had a family that he knew from there and then told us the name of the family and I did not remember until we met this family and it was the same family my father spoke of. And when I told her that my dad knows her she was very delighted to meet me and my brother because she had seen us when we were kids.

The Oduehis cook somewhere behind their house and use firewood because it is the cheapest source of fuel that they can afford. Mrs Oduehi sells bread in a small stall in front of their house and that is their source of income. They also have a small farm which they plant corn.

It was great meeting this family and my dad already told me they were good people before I even met them but he did not know where they stayed and somehow we were guided to them. They were so happy to meet us and even happier to receive the bag of Rice. They have a little grocery shop and I doubt that they make any money from it and I know that they deserve this bag of Rice and that it will be very helpful to them. I’m glad that we met this family and that we left them happier than we met them.
