Bag of Rice Project #140 -A visit to the Emeka family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Emeka family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Conceicao Sousa this is the 140th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Aba, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their church leader. The Emeka family live in a one bedroom apartment and share their utilities with other people in the same house. They have 3 kids and they do their best to take care of them.

They do not have a kitchen but they have an empty space near their house and they use firewood to cook their food. They just put wood under and use a metal stand to place on top of the wood and that metal stand then supports their pot or kettle. Mr Emeka is a bike rider and here and Nigeria people pay a certain agreed amount to be carried to their destinations on bike because it will get them to their destination. Mr Emeka’s wife Ugo, is a tailor but she has not been to her shop for a while because of the birth of her baby.

We were so happy to meet this wonderful family. When we told them who we were and what we brought for them, they were so happy. They were not expecting us at all and showed genuine smile and surprise and were grateful to those who donated and brought this bag of Rice into their lives. Things are hard in this country and when families like this one gets a bag of Rice they see it as a miracle and I am glad that I got to witness a miracle.
