Bag of Rice Project #141 -A visit to the Mark family

Spread the love

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Mark family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jamie Michaelis this is the 141st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village head and he also acted as our translator. The Mark family live in a two bedroom mud house with the utilities built separately from the house. We met Mrs Mark who is a widow and she has 5 kids. She is staying in her mothers house who is an octogenarian ( in her 80’s but lost track of how old) and can not see well. We would have loved to meet Mrs Mark’s 5 kids but they were not home as at the time we visited.

The Marks cook in a mud hut behind their house and they use firewood to cook which makes the pots black and sooty but it has the benefit of being cheap. Mrs Mark is a hairdresser and this coronavirus epidemic has effected her work and she is mostly at home now taking care of her mother.

This family was the first family that we saw as we visited this village. They were not expecting us but were very happy when they heard why we came to visit them and the miracle we brought for them. This bag of Rice will make a huge difference to this family as they do not have a very reliable source of income. They were very grateful and expressed their thanks through the translator to me. I could see their happiness on their faces and felt privileged to be a part of these awesome work.
