Bag of Rice Project #142 -A visit to the Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akpan family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jake and Amber Given this is the 142nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this very wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who was humble enough to act as our translator as well. We met Mr Akpan, he has 5 kids although we only met 2 of his children at home and his wife had gone to market to sell palm fruits. They live in a one bedroom mud hut that was in a very clean environment.

Their kitchen is in the second room of their hut and they use firewood to cook because its the cheapest.Mr Akpan is a carpenter and does all the local jobs he can find and his wife sells palm fruits from their local farm at a nearby market. This wonderful family was very interesting for us to meet and Mr Akpan jokingly told us that he was on mummy duty as his wife was not at home. Pretty stoic man but tells some good jokes to break the ice.

As Mr Akpan was on daddy duty, we met him and his two youngest daughters Ellen and Blessing. They were wonderful and gave us very wonderful smiles and we just could not refuse taking pictures of them. Mr Akpan was very grateful for the bag of Rice and spoke to us about how this economy has been harsh to his business and family. This family very well deserves this bag of Rice and I was happy they got it.
