Bag of Rice Project #145 -A visit to the Akanubo family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akanubo family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Missy Schenkman, Cat St Laurent, Kaylan Smith and Karla Edwards this is the 145th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. The Akanubos live in a one bedroom mud house with other utilities build outside the main house. We met Mrs Comfort Akanubo and her four children. They live in the house with their Mrs Comfort’s mother. Mr Akanubo works in the city and only returns home on the weekends.

Mrs Comfort cooks with firewood in a kind of wooden canopy. Firewood is the cheapest form of fuel in Nigeria so that is what this family can afford. Mrs Comfort is a farmer and goes to farm to harvest and sell her farm produce to feed her kids. Her husband lives in Uyo and drives a motorcycle which is used for commercial purposes. This family still struggles to make ends meet and that was why they were recommended to us.

Families like this are what makes this deliveries very special. The Akanubo family had no idea that we were coming and when they found out why we came and what we brought for them, they were so happy and grateful. They have struggled a lot with feeding and taking care of their kids and having their prayers answered in this unexpected manner made them very joyful. I am happy that we left them in a better state than we met them.
