Bag of Rice Project #150 -A visit to the Benego family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Benego family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Abigail Campbell this is the 150th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief. Mrs Benego is a widow and she has two kids and they live in a one bedroom mud hut. The other utilities are built separate from the main house.

The Benegos cook in a small structure made of zinc and they use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest they can find. Mrs Benego is the village’s midwife and she has been doing it for decades. Most people prefer to deliver at a hospital and only a few come to her. So her and her family has had to turn to farming in order to survive.

We traveled a long way to meet this family and they were very happy to meet us. When we explained what we brought for them, they were even happier and grateful to those who donated to them. This family deserved this gift and it was heartwarming seeing the joy it brought to their life.
