Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ekeke family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor this is the 156th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
In a village outside of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, we met the Ekeke family. They were recommended to us by their village chief when we visited him. The Ekekes live in a two bedroom mud house with no electricity or plumbing. On speaking to Mr Ekeke we discovered that his wife ran away and left him with 3 boys to raise. He said he came back from work one day and did not see her again. This happened 2 years ago. It was a delight visiting this family and getting to talk to Mr Ekeke and his children.
Since Mr Ekeke’s wife left him, he moved his work back home. He makes roofs and mats from Palm fonds and sells to other families in the village. It has been difficult for him to take care of his family as well as work so he mostly works from home. The Ekekes cook in a kitchen that they share with their neighbors and they use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest that they can afford.

It took us a long time to find where the Ekeke’s live and when we told them of the reason for our visit and what we brought for them, their faces lit up. Mr Ekeke was not expecting us at all and he was all smiles at the unexpected gift. I wonder the strength it takes, to survive your wife just disappearing on you and leaving you with three kids to take care of. This family deserves this bag of Rice and I felt very happy to deliver it to them.
