Bag of Rice Project #158 -A visit to the Israel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Israel family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to a Disciple of Jesus Christ this is the 158th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village called Uruk Anam in Akwa Ibom state. They were introduced to us by their village chief. We met Mrs Israel at home with three of her kids at home. Her husband had already gone to work when we arrived to see them. The Israels have 5 kids and live in a mud house with no plumbing or electricity. It was a delight meeting Mrs Israel and the kids and their smiles warmed our hearts after a long journey to their village.

The Israels cook in one of the rooms in their house, which turns into a bedroom at night for the kids. They use firewood to cook but in the rainy season like this they turn to Kerosene. Mr Israel is currently unemployed and his wife fries a local delicacy called Garri which she sells at the local market but she has not made any sales since the new arrival of baby number 5. This family’s story is touching as they struggle to find food to eat and Mr Israel is out everyday looking for any odd job he can do in a community that is also struggling with poverty like he is.

Seeing this families living conditions and hearing Mrs Israel’s story from our translator, I really felt this families happiness with our visit and with the bag of Rice. It would make a world of difference to this family and save them from starvation. With the new baby in the house and Mr Israel’s current unemployed status this family has been praying for help and I believe that they were praying for something like this to happen to them. I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to meet families like this and I’m sure that their constant prayers for blessings to those who donated and facilitated this bag of Rice will not go unanswered.
