Bag of Rice Project #159 -A visit to the Dickson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Dickson family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Ashley Walz this is the 159th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. In this compound we met two families but since they were related we decided to treat them like one family. Mr Okon and Egan Dickson are brothers living in the same compound, they’re both married and they both have one kid. They live in a two bedroom mud house with no plumbing or electricity and both share a kitchen built outside their house.

The Dicksons share the same kitchen that they built out of sticks and a thatch roof but and they use firewood to cook. This is the cheapest form of fuel but has the side effect of making the pots black with soot which is difficult to wash off. The elder Dickson( Okon) is disabled and makes some living by raring Goats to sell at the local market while his younger brother is a tailor who works from home and is the main breadwinner for the both families.

When we visited this family and told them who we were and what we brought for them, they were beyond happy and grateful for the bag of Rice. This family deserves this gift and have been affected greatly by the effects of the Coronavirus induced lockdown. They have been barely surviving off of their little farm but this bag of Rice will feed them for a long time to come.
