Bag of Rice Project #161 -A visit to the Samuel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Samuel family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Meg Carter this is the 161st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who also acted as our guide and translator. If you’re looking for a experienced translators then you can find more information about Espresso Translations here. The Samuel family live in a mud house with no plumbing or electricity. The Samuels have four children but we did not meet Mr Samuel and two of his children at home because they went to the farm that morning.

The Samuels do not have a kitchen so they cook with firewood on the ground behind their house and they rely on rain water collected from the zinc roof. Mr Samuels is a farmer as well as a bike man who gives rides to people on his bike while charging them a fee. This is a hard and arduous work and it does not pay enough so his wife also makes peoples hair from her home in order to help run the family.

The Samuels were not expecting us so this visit came as a surprise to them but the joy and happiness on their face needed no translation. Mrs Samuel was so grateful and kept thanking those who donated this wonderful gift to their family. This wonderful family has been struggling and managing the little they have and I was happy that we could make this contribution to their efforts. The long journey back was very satisfying because of this wonderful experience.
