Bag of Rice Project #164 -A visit to the Jonah family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Jonah family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Shirley Taylor this is the 164th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who also acted as our translator and guide. The Jonahs live in a mud hut that has no plumbing or electricity. The Jonahs have lost their parents and were living alone in their old house that is slowly falling apart. We met both Eleazer and his younger brother Udoh Jonah at home and they were beyond happy to see us.

The Jonahs do not have a room to use as their kitchen, so they cook in the open with firewood which is the cheapest form of fuel they can afford. Since their parents died a few years ago, Eleazer has been doing all he can to take care of his brother. He does odd jobs for people in the neighborhood from clearing farms for a fee to fetching water from the stream for different households. This work which he doesn’t find often brings in very little money which sometimes is not enough to take care of him and his brother. The people around them help out as much as they can but most people in this village are as poor as this family.

When I heard the story of these boys I could not wait to meet this family. I spoke to Eleazer and he did not understand why we were giving them a bag of Rice. Having struggled for so long this gift came as a huge surprise to him. I appreciate this family and I know that this bag of Rice will keep them from hunger for a long while. Nigerians value Rice more than any other meal and it is the most versatile Nigerian meal you can get. These families value and appreciate these gifts and to some of them its literally a life and death situation. I am so thankful for the experiences that I’ve gotten from this visits and it has opened my eyes to the bad situations of most families and with the cost of Rice steadily going up in Nigeria this work is very important and lifesaving.
