Bag of Rice Project #165 -A visit to the Frank family

Spread the love

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Frank family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jason Gill this is the 165th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village in Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief who also acted as our guide and translator. The Franks live in a one bedroom mudhouse without plumbing and electricity. We only met Mr Frank and one of his sons. His wife was not around when we visited and she had gone to the market. The Franks have three kids and have been struggling to feed and take care of them.

The Franks cook at the back of their house with firewood because it is the cheapest they can find. Mr Frank is a farmer and has a small Cassava farm that the whole family farms in and they harvest and sell to get food for their family. Mrs Jonah sells some of their farm produce and that was were she was when we visited. Mr Jonah also uses his bike to transport people but this is often hard work and does not pay that much.

It was a delight meeting this family. When visited this family and explained why we visited, they were happy and grateful for their bag of Rice. They thanked those who donated for them to have this bag of Rice. As Rice is an essential part of Nigerian food and is so expensive this is a very cherished gift to receive in this economy. Seeing this family very happy with their bag of Rice made me so happy and made our long return journey home very worth it.
