Bag of Rice Project #166 -A visit to the Udeme family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Udeme family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Trina Hunter this is the 166th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who was our guide and translator for this visit. The Udemes live in a one bedroom mudhouse that has no plumbing or electricity. They have 4 kids but one of their kids had to go and live with a family friend in Lagos, due to lack of funds to feed all their kids. We had earlier seen Mr Udeme when we came to the village some weeks back and we promised him that we will return and visit them.

The Udemes cook in the open outside their home with firewood. This is because it is the cheapest form of fuel although this method has the side effect of turning the pots black with soot. Mr Udeme works at the beach diving and scooping sand with a canoe and then selling it to those who want to build houses. This is both a risky and low paying job due to the scarceness of buyers. His wife Aniedi is a trader and sells vegetables in the local market

The Udeme family were not expecting us and they were geniunely surprised and happy with our visit. This bag of Rice is now an expensive commodity for what is a very essential meal for Nigerians and families who can not afford it often go hungry. This family struggles to find enough money to feed their family and this bag of Rice will be beneficial to them.
