Bag of Rice Project #168 -A visit to the Samuel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Samuel family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Missy Waite this is the 168th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Samuel family in a village outside Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief who also acted as our guide and translator. The Samuels live in a mud hut with no plumbing or electricity and have to fetch their water in a stream that is far away. They have four kids. We did not meet Mr Samuel at home as he had gone to work but we were happy meeting his wife and the rest of the family.

The Samuels took us their kitchen which was constructed out of zinc and palm fonds. They use firewood to cook and also had a stone where they crushed palm nuts to eat the white part of it. We could see that this family was struggling to find food to eat and their kids had distended looking stomachs from malnutrition. Mr Samuel is a farmer and often lends out his services to work in other peoples far so that he can get paid. This has not been enough to feed his growing family.

For this family this gift was a big deal. They have resorted to eating palm nuts most days and the gift of a bag of Rice was very welcomed to them. Mrs Samuel was pregnant with baby number five and they were very grateful and happy for their bag of Rice. This will feed their family well and because it is Rice they will have many ways to cook it and survive this bad corona induced economy.
