Bag of Rice Project #170 -A visit to the Jonah family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Jonah family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Missy Waite this is the 170th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. The Jonahs live in a mud hut that has no electricity or plumbing and for water they rely on a local stream. Mr Akpan has four kids and has been alone since his wife died a couple of years ago. We did not meet him at home.

Ever since Mrs Jonah died, Mr Jonah has been taking care of his family by his lone self. He works as a mason and offers his services in any place where a house is built. Most days he does not find work and has to go home empty handed. His two eldest sons also help out when he gets a masonry job. This family uses firewood to cook since its the cheapest source of fuel they can find.

This family reminds me so much of my own family especially after my mom passed away. The resilience of single fathers worldwide has to be admired and I know Mr Jonah does everything to try and keep his family alive and I was grateful to have supported his efforts with our visits. They were very happy with the bag of Rice and extended their appreciation to the donors. This family was special to me for many reasons and I was glad to have met them during this visits.
