Bag of Rice Project #171 -A visit to the Alexander family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Alexander family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Missy Waite this is the 171st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief. The Alexenders live in a mud hut with no plumbing or electricity. They fetch water from a small stream in the village or collect rainwater which they store and use for their use. The Alexanders have five kids but we only met Mr Alexander and three of the kids at home. The other two kids live with relatives in the city and their mom was at the market when we visited.

The Alexanders cook with firewood in a structure that is just five wooden sticks covered by a tarp. Mr Alex is a trained driver but has lost his job due to downsizing. He has now turned to farming and plants cassava which they sell so they can make a living for their children. His wife sells Garri at the local market and was there when we visited them.

Mr Alex was very emotional during our visit. He was not expecting us and was very surprised with the gift of a bag of Rice and thanked those who donated to their family. This economic lockdown has been hard on all families especially families like this and they greatly appreciate this gift and it will feed them for a long while.
