Bag of Rice Project #175 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Okon family, their bag of rice was Donated in loving memory of Sarah Mooreland this is the 175th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

For our 175th bag of Rice we met the Okon family. They live in a village in Uyo and were recommended to us by their Village chief. The Okon family live in a one bedroom mud house that has no electricity or plumbing. Mrs Okon is a widow and lives in the house with her kids and her mother. It has been hard for them to survive since her husband and breadwinner died and she has been struggling to take care of her two children and her aging mother.

The Okons cook in the open, using some sticks to light a fire. This mainly because this method is cheap and brings out so much smoke that they can’t cook inside. Mrs Okon is a widow and her mom is old, so she has to find things to do in other to take care of her family. She works at a local oil mill and helps in preparing palm nuts to be turned into palm oil. This very back breaking work is very seasonal and she backs it up with farming in her back yard.

The Okon family were excited to meet us. We have been around their area but did not get to visit them in the past so they were ecstatic to meet us. They were grateful for the bag of Rice and were very thankful to those who donated for it. Rice has steadily been climbing in price since the lock down and every family we have visited appreciates this because they know that it will last for a long time and save them a lot of money too.
