Bag of Rice Project #176 -A visit to the Ekwo family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Ekwo family, their bag of rice was Donated in loving memory of Sarah Mooreland this is the 176th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Ekwo family in a village outside Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village head who also acted as our guide. The Ekwos live in a mud house with no plumbing or electricity. We met Mrs Ekwo and her mother in law at home. The Ekwos have 5 children and they just welcomed a new one to their family. Mr Ekwo works for a beer factory in the city and only comes back home on some weekends due to travel cost. We loved this family and were happy to meet them.

The Ekwos constructed a semi open shed and use it as a kitchen. They collect rain water and use firewood to cook. From the questions I asked it seemed like Mr Ekwo had not been back to see the family for two weeks and they have been finding it hard to eat especially for the young mother. Her four kids who were out working in other peoples farms so that they can bring something home for the family. They oldest of the kids is 13. I was touched by their story and struggle and was especially looking forward to meeting this family.

Needless to say that this family was happy to see us because I can see how essential it would be for them. Mrs Ekwo was close to tears and very much appreciated the bag of Rice and I am sure that her prayers to God for blessings to those who donated will be answered. Her and her family has done all they could to survive and I was happy to help them in this their journey.
