Bag of Rice Project #178 -A visit to the Okoro family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Okoro family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Amy Trettien this is the 178th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. They were referred to us by their village chief. The Okoros live in a one bedroom mud hut that they built themselves. The house does not have electricity or plumbing and they collect rain water or go to a stream nearby to fetch water. The Okoros have 6 kids and they were very happy to see us.

The Okoros built a semi open shed and they use it for their kitchen. They use firewood to cook because it i the cheapest they could afford. Mr Okoro was not home when we visited. He had gone to look for any odd jobs he can find to do. He lost his job working at some company last year and he has not found another since. Mrs Okoro helps out by selling fruits at the market.

It was a delight meeting this family. They were so lovely to meet. They were very grateful for the bag of Rice and thanked those who donated for them to benefit from it. Food is very expensive in Nigeria and to families like this it has been hard for them to get by. There is always this tangible excitement when we visit this families and its been an honor for me to go through this experience.
