Bag of Rice Project #191 -A visit to the Ufot family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ufot family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Niki Wendt In loving memory of her Mother and Sheryl Freeman and Amy Trettien this is the 191st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Ufot family to us. The Ufots have 3 kids and they live in a one bedroom mudhouse with no access to electricity and plumbing. For water they fetch from a local stream or collect rainwater.

The Ufots cook with firewood because that is the cheapest that they can afford. Mr Ufot is a welder but in a village like this he hardly gets work and does not want to leave his family and go to the city like other people do. He supplements his skill with farming and that has been what has been keeping his family afloat. His wife Mrs Ufot sells the things they get from the farm in the local market.

It was nice to meet this family. We travelled very far to see them and I was happy when I met them. They were also happy to see us and expressed their thanks for their bag of Rice. This means a lot to this family as they currently can not afford a bag of Rice and were very grateful to be gifted one. The Nigerian economy worsens by the day and families like this can not afford to buy the things they used to buy.
