Bag of Rice Project #192 -A visit to the Uyiobong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Uyiobong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tracy Rickett this is the 192nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Uyiobong family to us. The Uyis have 2 kids and they live in a one bedroom mudhouse with no access to electricity and plumbing. For water they fetch from a local stream or collect rainwater.

The Uyis cook in a semi open kitchen. They use firewood because it is the cheapest they can afford. The Uyi family has been having problems surviving as the economic shutdown was especially hard on Mr Uyi who owed a shop selling provisions but was forced to consume most of his goods during the lockdown and now has no capital to start over again. They sent their kids over to Mr Uyi’s parents and they recently started farming so they can get food to eat.

We were happy to visit this young family and bring them some good news. They were very grateful for the bag of Rice and expressed their thanks to those who donated it to them. We were very happy on our way back when we saw the smiles on their faces.
