Bag of Rice Project #198 -A visit to the Uyobong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Uyobong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Dori Putnam, Alison Van House and Angie Rod this is the 197th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Uyobong family to us and they were very interesting to meet. Mrs Uyobong is a widow, she and her seven kids live in a one bedroom mudhouse that has no electricity or plumbing. This village also has a problem with water and to get water they have to fetch from their local stream or collect rain water.

The Uyobongs cook in a semi open kitchen made of mud and bamboo sticks. They use firewood to cook as it is the most available and cheapest means of fuel for them to use. Mrs Uyobong is a farmer and her and her seven kids all work at the farms growing cassava. They eat and sell the harvest from their farm and that is how they survive. At times when their is poor harvest like this year, they find it hard to eat and to take care of their other needs.

Most of the Uyobong family were at the farm working when we arrived to meet them. Mrs Uyobong left the farm and came to meet us and she was pleasantly surprised with our visit and the bag of Rice we brought for her family. She expressed her thanks to those who donated to her family. This family works really hard for their survival and this bag of rice will go a long way in helping them continue that.
