Bag of Rice Project #202 -A visit to the Umakiso family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Umakiso family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Becky Wright, this is the 202nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Umakiso family to us and they were very interesting to meet. The Umakisos have 4 kids and live in a two bedroom mudhouse that has no electricity or plumbing. They also live with Mr Umakisos mother. This village also has a problem with water and to get water they have to fetch from their local stream or collect rain water.

The Umakiso family cook at the back of their house in a small open kitchen. the same place where they rear their goats. They use firewood as it it the cheapest fuel they can afford. Mr Umakiso is a farmer and him and his family help farm cassava and Mrs Umakiso sells the harvest from their farm. This serves as their only source of income and is barely enough for this family to survive.

We were delighted to meet this family. They were happy to meet us as well and were pleasantly surprised by their bag of Rice. They expressed thanks for it and prayed for the well being of those who donated this Rice to them. Families like this can no longer afford a bag of Rice and they buy in small quantities. This will go a long way in helping this family survive this covid induced economic lockdown.
