Bag of Rice Project #203 -A visit to the Okoko family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Okoko family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lindsey Watkins this is the 203rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village in the southern part of Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief whom we had to meet before we entered the village. He recommended the Okoko family to us and they were very interesting to meet. The Okokos have five kids and they live in a two bedroom mudhouse that has no electricity or plumbing. This village also has a problem with water and to get water they have to fetch from their local stream or collect rain water.

The Okokos cook in a semi open kitchen. They use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest they can afford. Mr Okoko is a farmer and he grows Corn and Cassava. His wife Mrs Okoko sells vegetables at their local market and he also sells produce from their farm. This can barely support this family and this year has had poor harvests.

We really enjoyed visiting this family. We spent sometime with them because Mr Okoko was not at home and they had to fetch him from the farm. They were very grateful for the bag of Rice and were very grateful to those who donated it to their family. I can see what this meant to their family and we left them happier than we met them.
