. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Okokon family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Bryson this is the 212th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in a village outside Uyo, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief and he also gave us someone to guide us to locate the family. Mrs Okokon is a widow and she lives in a one room mud house with her 4 kids and her sick mother. The house does not have plumbing or electricity and for water they fetch from a local stream or collect rain water.

The Okokons cook in a seperate room that serves as a bedroom and a kitchen. They use firewood to cook and Mrs Okokons mother stays in the same room. Mrs Okokon is a food seller and makes food every weekday and pushes it around in a small hand cart. They can barely break even with her job and she struggles between feeding her family and buying drugs for her mom. We also met her brother Mr Okon and he also tries to support their mom and also contributes to the family.

This family has been through so much and Mrs Okokon also lost one of her kids this year. They were very happy to see us and were very very grateful for the bag of Rice given to their family. Rice means a lot to Nigerians due to it’s versatility and families cherish it a lot especial since most of them can not afford it due to its high price tag. This bag will feed this family for a while and especial through this Christmas and New Year.
