. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Udondo family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Maryhelen Freeman, Charlotte and Claire Thayne, Betty Pearson and Juan Aleman this is the 215th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

All throughout our visit to this village I kept hearing about this family. Eventually when we were done visiting other families we set off to where they lived. The person taking us to their house only knew that the man was crippled and “pedals” his wheelchair. We were surprised with what we saw when we visited them. It turns out that both Mr Udondo and his wife are disabled and they have 6 kids. He has no use of this legs and she only has one leg it was a puzzling sight to see how they get around . Two of their kids are working as indentured servants for other families. The rest of the family stay in a one room mud house that has no electricity or plumbing.

Parents allow their kids to be indentured servants to other families in exchange for them to be sent to school. This is a last resort for parents when they can no longer afford to care for their own children. As an indentured servant they are suppose to care for the other family, cook clean and in exchange get a daily meal and school. Often this does not work out and they are abused, not fed well or not permitted to go to school as first agreed upon.

The Udondo family cook in a semi open kitchen that they share with other neighbours. They use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest that they can afford. Mr Udondo is unemployed and has been for long time. His wife is also unemployed and when I asked them how they feed their family, Mr Udondo said “God finds a way to feed us” I didn’t know what to respond to that answer. On our way back our guide told us that people want Mr Udondo to contest for the equivalent of a county representative (local government representative) because everybody loves him.

My jaw hung open during the entirety of our visit to this family. From where they live, to how they feed and do the basic things like getting water or going to the market, I was just wondering how they survived and the strength they must have to still be alive with smiles on their faces. They were very happy to see us and grateful for the bag of Rice. I felt a lot more humble after visiting this family. Their smiles will forever be engraved in my heart and I pray God keeps figuring out ways to help them.
