. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Okon family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Karen Hibshman this is the 272nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Akpan family live in a village called Uruk Unam located in the southern part of Nigeria. The Akpans have 5 children and they all live in a two bedroom mud house with no electricity and plumbing. Though their roof was in a really bad state. We met Mrs Akpan with two of her kids at home, the rest were in school. The Akpan’s are into small scale trading and that is their only source of livelihood.

The Akpans could not afford to build a kitchen so they cook in an open space with a metal tripod stand supported by firewood. It is unbearable during the rainy season because the wind and heavy rain drops can disrupt their cooking and eventually force them to go hungry, it has been difficult for them because their small scale trading is not yielding enough for their upkeep.

It was a long walk to meet the Akpan’s but we were relieved with their nice gesture. They offered us water and seats, they were so happy about the bag of rice and thanked us for remembering them in a time like this. They were also grateful to those who donated the bag of rice to them after we explained how it got to them and they rendered heartwarming prayers to them as well.
