Bag of Rice Project #281 -A visit to the Udogwu family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign
. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Udogwu family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Julie Bryson this is the 281st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Odogwus in Uruk Unam in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It was a lonely and serene place to stay and very remote. We met the family of Mrs Titus Udogwu, she is in her early 60s. She has been a widow and is blessed with 4 children. She lives with three of her grand children because their parents left to the city to work and she takes care of them with the little she gets from her local tobacco selling business and small scale farming. The kids were all between the age bracket of (7-11yrs). They all live in a 2 bedroom mudhouse with no plumbing or electricity.

She prepares her meals in a semi open kitchen. She uses firewood and cooks with the popular metal tripod stand which was supported by firewoods to heat up her metal pot. Mrs Odogwu is a farmer and she grows cassava and yams. It has been tough for her but she finds a way to take care of her grandkids without much of her children’s help. Which might be one of the reason why she was happy that we visited her.

Their kitchen

Mrs Titus was really surprised we visited her, she thought we came to buy some pumpkin leaves, after explaining the purpose of our visit and what we brought for her, she jumped with joy in her heart after presenting the bag of rice to her and thanked everyone for this great help including the sponsors and donors. We loved meeting her and her family and one of them insisted on wearing his dark shades before pictures and he was the star of the show.
