Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Thompson family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Maryellen Raymond and Paula Reichow this is the 328th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Thompson family in a Oruk Anam, a village in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. They were introduced to us by their village chief who also provided a guide to help us with directions and translation. The Thompsons live in a one bedroom mudhouse with 2 of their 5 kids. This village has not had electricity for a very long time and to get water they have to trek to the village stream.
The Thompsons cook with firewood just outside their house. It is the cheapest form of fuel they can afford like many in this village. Mr Thompson is a Palm fruit cutter, he uses a harness and cuts Palm fruits for a fee. It is dangerous work but it has been a family tradition for his family. Mrs Thompson sells fruits at the local market so she can support her husband in raising their family.
The Thompsons were very happy to see us and even more excited when they learned who were and why we were visiting them. They thanked those who donated the bag of Rice to their family and prayed that they will be blessed as well.
