Bag of Rice Project #329 -A visit to the Comfort family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign
. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Comfort family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Amy Freeman this is the 329th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Comfort family in Oruk Anam. Which is located just outside Uyo, Nigeria. The Comfort family were recommended to us by their village head. Mrs Comfort lost her husband some years ago and they had 5 kids, she lives with her youngest daughter and her grandkid came to visit. They live in a one room mud house that has no electricity or plumbing. To get water, they either go to a local stream that is a long walk or collect rain water.

The Comforts cook in a room in their house that doubles as a bedroom too. They use firewood because it is the cheapest means of fuel that they can afford. Mrs Comfort is a farmer and uses the back of her house to grow cassava and Corn, which she sells at the local market as well as vegetables. This hardly brings enough to the house and that is why most of her children are living with other families in the city she can not afford to care for their basic needs or feed them.

The Comforts were surprised with our visit and did not expect the gift we brought for them. Mrs Comfort kept asking if the Rice was for them alone because Rice is expensive in Nigeria. I had to reassure her and she probably did not believe us until we left them with the whole bag. We enjoyed our visit to this family as Mrs Comfort might as well be the funniest person in the world right now, she brings joy to all those she meets. She thanked us and prayed for those who gave her this unexpected gift.
