Bag of Rice Project #33 -A visit to the Alex family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Alex family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Marlow is the 33rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This wonderful family was recommended to us by their church leader, another story about a strong woman leading the family in the absence of a male figure. Mrs Uju Alex has 5 kids and an absentee husband who they have not seen in years. They live in a rented apartment where the houses face each other and they have almost no space to walk in-between the houses. They share other facilities with other tenants and they have no reserved for cooking and just bring out their cooking utensils to the front of their home and cook.

Despite the challenges she has been facing Mrs Uju has persevered and has taken care of her kids for a long time, she is a trader and buys and sells foodstuffs. Her courage and determination has motivated and inspired me, one of her kids is in college and all from her mother’s hard work. When we gave her her bag of rice she was overjoyed and kept expressing her thanks over and over again. We felt her happiness and I felt honored to meet her and to contribute in someway to something that can strengthen her and make her face the future with a spring in her steps.
