Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ruben family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Brittany Woodhouse this is the 331st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
It was raining when we met the Ruben family. They were referred to us by their village head who also sent someone to guide us to where the Ruben family were staying. Mrs Ruben has been widowed for many years and lives in a one bedroom mud hut with some of her kids. Even through the rain we were happy to visit this family.
The Rubens cook with firewood just in front of their house. They use a metal tripod and you can see the dark soot against the wall where they cook. Mrs Ruben is a farmer and even as old as she is still farms and sells her farm produce at the local market. Her kids help her out in the farm as much as they can they trade of tending to the little ones. If the family is to survive everyone has to work, both young and old.
It took us a while to get to the Rubens because of the rain and they were surprised to see us and they were so grateful for the gift we brought to their family. Mrs Ruben thanked us over and over again and prayed for blessings on those who donated the bag of Rice to their family. They can not afford a full bag of Rice and in these times this visits are very treasured by these families and they will never forget these experiences of unexpected kindness.
