Bag of Rice Project #34 -A visit to the Egbuta family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Egbuta family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Wendy Shuler this is the 34th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This story is about the Egbuta family, another example of a strong woman leading and taking charge of a major responsibility like raising her 4 kids on her own. Mrs Chiwendu Egbuta has 4 kids and her husband left them and has been away for the past 5 years of their lives. They live in a one bedroom apartment where her and her 4 boys manage to survive in.

Mrs Egbuta has four lovely kids, all boys. We only met 3 of them at home as the other kid was not around at the time of our visit. Two of her kids Justin and Wisdom were so excited to take a picture with the rice and we took a picture of them with the rice. When we asked Mrs Egbuta what she does for a living , she explained to us that she makes and sells homemade soaps, bleach and perfume and hawks it around neighborhood and her kids help out however they can. According to her, this does not take care of the kids properly and as at the time of our visit they hadn’t eaten since morning.

Upon our visit, Mrs Egbuta was very touched that we remembered her. She said that it seemed like everyone had abandoned her and she was very delighted that we remembered her. She knew us when we were kids and she was so happy to see us and even more happy when she saw what we brought for her. She said it was a miracle that brought us to her at the time we came to her as they had no food at home and she had not made or sold any of her products for a week because of lack of funds. Seeing the state of this family and the strength of this wonderful woman brought tears to my eyes because I remembered when she was much younger and how she looked but i was happy and consoled by the fact that she is looking so much stronger and toughened by her circumstances and our gift of a bag of rice will help her to continue to overcome her challenges.
