Bag of Rice Project #352 -A visit to the Abasi family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign
. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing
Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Abasi family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lindsay Arnett with Silverlining Roofing this is the 352nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Abasi family lived in Ikot Oku in a typically constructed mud house built with bamboo sticks and plantain leaves. They didn’t have doors nor windows, instead just an cloth to cover the opening. We met the head of the house, Mr Effiong Udo Abasi who told us he was planning on renovating the house and he started by constructing zinc roof tops to cover the old mud buildings. He introduced us to his wife Grace Udo. They have 7 kids Mr Effiong Udo is a retired farmer and his first son is a welder who constructed the building for them. We also met Eno James , Mrs Grace sister who is also a farmer.

Life is never easy as a farmer. It takes hard work from each member of the family. Providing a daily meal is always a struggle and now his children continue the struggle as they start families of their own and also help their parents as they age and work becomes much harder for them. You can tell the love they have for eachother, the roof the son provided for his parents. Something they could never achieve. This strong roof now protects this small house that is held together with sticks and mud.

Their kitchen is roughly designed with sticks and stones the food stand is covered with cemented rocks and a large trypot stand also by the side are large iron pots used in boiling water to bath due to the bad water condition in the village.

The family of Mr and Mrs Effiong Udo Abasi were really happy and grateful for the bag of rice we delivered. Mr Abasi kept telling me war stories from the Nigerian civil war as I was collecting their information. We were very excited to see them and spend time with this special family.
